Wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) Systems and their Advances

In this post, we would like to discuss the brain-computer interface (BCI). We will explain what it is and the new advances in this field. There has been a rapid growth of studies in the area of the brain-computer interface in the last decade.

Brian-Computer Interface

A brain-computer interface often includes:

  • A set of sensors to acquire neurophysiological intention signals
  • A wired or wireless system to transmit this data
  • A processing component

All these three parts participate in capturing the data from brain activities. Also, to analyze it as a direct communication channel between the brain and an external device.

External Devices

These external devices can be any of the following:

  • Computer applications
  • Home appliances
  • Prosthetic devices

With the new avenues opened because of technological advances in science and technology, there is a great potential for real-time embedded systems and signal processing techniques, which translates into smaller and lighter device sizes, higher speed, more accuracy, and non-invasiveness. However, the users’ needs are essential to consider in developing new BCIs.

Conclusion

Although we have come a long way from the bulky original wired BCI devices, there is an excellent potential for further improvements to be explored and implemented. We need to study the possibilities further to improve the quality of the captured signals, decrease the noise charged, and design miniaturized stylish designs with more diverse applications applicable to our day-to-day lives.
